EPLD Lights Glass Eyed. |
EPLD has recently completed London and Cambridge showcases for the
Multimedia performance company Glass Eyed. Working with then through
the Junctions Talent Coaching scheme, a design for their show was
created and adapted, and advice was given on the various aspects of
working in theatre, including the structure of the lighting design to
actual setup in the theatre, practices and terminology frequently
used in the industry.
With the main focus of the piece being a front projection, the
company wanted to keep the lighting minimal, but complimenting the
projection and their live performance. This was mainly achieved with
subtle backlight, and side light in amber and salmon, to give depth
to the actors on the stage. Certain "areas" were present in the
piece, and this was highlighted in the design. Floor lights also
provided a dramatic end to the piece as the actors are standing down
stage near the audience for the first time, lit only up light
profiles.
Glass Eyed are now taking bookings and will be performing soon in
Glasgow and London, including a booking by the National Review.
EPLD hopes to work with the company again. Please see the Gallery
section for photos from these two showcases. |

EPLD Lights Ophelia |
Loving Ophelia at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington, has recently
completed a 2 week run of the Whosbur Relic's production, written by
Katherine Knowles and directed by Hannah Price. Working with Hannah
throughout, EPLD has created a design for this small studio space,
allowing the themes and dark nature of the play to show through. With
candle light being used throughout the play, the design had to
compliment this, and at times, the candles were the only source of
light on stage.
3 basic states were established, with various specials to highlight
certain events in scenes and general cover for the performers who
populated the various bars around the stage.
Please see the Gallery section for photos from the rehearsal and
some period paintings. |

September 2003: Avolites product brochure 2003 |
Inclusion of a review from Total Production (May 2003), by Louise
Stickland for the Butoh piece mentioned below.
"Kent University Computer Science graduate Edward Pennie BSc-
who did his industrial placement at Avolites last year- lit a final
year devised dance piece "Butoh" for fellow student Kay Rimmington,
part of the final assessment for her degree.
The 30 minute performance staged at the University's Canterbury
Campus's Gulbenkian Theatre, was Edward's first dance lighting
design work. Accompanied by live Tabla and a pre-recorded sound
track, he utilised the theatre's house rig, a combination of
fixtures including Pattern 223's, Sil 30's, Source fours, Prelude
PCs and many more. He used traditional dance side booms, and lit
the show with a variety of rich, bold colour combinations.
This summer, Edward is working at the West Cliff Theatre at
Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on their Summer Spectacular 2003 which
alternates between two shows and uses an Avolites Pearl console and
Avo Dimmers."
